The Bhutan We Think We Know

FAQ

Where in Australia do Bhutanese actually live?

Overwhelmingly Perth, not the east coast — and this is the single most common mistake in the Bhutanese mental map of its own diaspora. Australia's foreign ministry states plainly that 'Western Australia is home to the largest population of Bhutanese people outside Bhutan.' The 2021 Census ranks Greater Perth (4,313) ahead of Canberra (1,833) and Adelaide (1,793), with Brisbane and Sydney lower. Perth had roughly thirty Bhutanese two decades ago; it now takes about two-thirds of all Bhutanese students in Australia, and in 2022 Bhutan was the most common non-Australian birthplace in the Perth suburbs of Osborne Park, Glendalough and Wembley.

Why the mistake persists: state-level tables hide it. New South Wales and Queensland totals aggregate several cities each (Sydney plus Armidale plus Albury; Brisbane plus Cairns plus regional towns), while the ACT is effectively one city — so Canberra’s second place only appears when you look at city geographies rather than states.

The Perth community is also very new. It is almost entirely the post-2020 student wave, anchored on Murdoch and the other WA institutions: about thirty people two decades ago, roughly 5,000 by the 2021 Census, and far more since.

Numbers for the whole diaspora are in how many Bhutanese live in Australia; what the migration has cost at home is The Missing Generation.
