What is Project 108?

Project 108 is the raising of 108 Jangchub Chortens — stupas of enlightenment — in a single day, on 1 November 2026, along the Mau Chhu in Gelephu Mindfulness City. Each chorten stands about fifteen metres tall, and they are placed 108 metres apart in one line of about 11.6 kilometres. His Majesty The King announced it on 21 February 2026, his birth anniversary, at the opening of the fifth Gelephu volunteer programme, with the instruction that all 108 be completed in one day, 300 volunteers to each. Close to 40,000 volunteers are needed on the day, and by 28 September 68,914 people had registered to attend. Each chorten costs USD 200,000 to raise, and almost all had secured sponsors by late June. The Central Monastic Body is preparing the sacred relics placed inside them at Sarpang Dzong. The date is Lhabab Duechen, the Descending Day of Lord Buddha, and Coronation Day.
