Druk Gyalpo

His Majesty The King

Also: His Majesty, His Majesty The King, Druk Gyalpo

Druk Gyalpo is the title of the King of Bhutan, used in formal register. The current Druk Gyalpo is Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the Fifth King, who acceded to the throne in 2006 and was formally crowned in 2008.

Bhutan has been a constitutional monarchy since the 2008 Constitution. The Crown’s strategic-articulating function — discussed extensively in Chapter Ten — operates above the parliamentary cycle and is the principal institutional source of long-horizon policy direction.
